Fifth wheels provide a very smooth towing experience, but hitching one up for the first time can be a struggle. Even experienced fifth wheel owners often find the process overcomplicated and stressful. Luckily, the experts at River City RV have created this hand fifth wheel hitching guide to help make things easier.
1. Choose a Level Surface
Start by finding a hard, level surface on which to hitch up your fifth wheel. A concrete slab is usually a good candidate. Use wheel chocks if your fifth wheel needs extra support and put your hitch into the coupling position.
2. Open the Wheel Jaws
Next, pull the side handle and secure it in the open position to retract the locking bar or open the hitch’s jaws. Apply high-pressure grease if these parts get stuck. If getting stuck becomes a recurring issue, we recommend installing a lube plate.
3. Back-Up Slowly
Now you’ll need to lower your tailgate and carefully line up your hitch. Having a spotter on hand to guide you can make this step much, much easier. Don’t forget to stop slightly before you reach the right position to account for your truck shifting slightly after you park.
4. Adjust the Jacks and Engage the Coupler
Once you’re sure that the hitch has been aligned, adjust your fifth wheel’s hacks until the hitch plate is about ½” above the kingpin box and back up your truck until the kingpin connects with the fifth wheel head. Once the connection has been made, park your truck, hit the emergency brake, and insert the safety pin. Double check that everything is secure before moving on to the final step.
5. Test the Coupling and Complete Your Checklist
Once you have the safety pin in place, it’s time to disengage the emergency brake, hit your trailer brakes, and place the vehicle in drive. More forward slowly until you feel the bit of resistance that means your connection is secure.
Before you set off on your RV camping trip, check everything one last time for safety’s sake. Make sure that the tailgate is closed, the safety pin/chains are fully in place, all wiring is connected, your jacks have been lifted, and that the wheel chocks have been removed. Now you can hit the road!
